Cajun termites

Beware the hidden dangers in your mulch.

Fortunately, the risk of actually bringing in Formosan termites from Louisiana is quite low, thanks to quarantines and precautions taken by the government and by the home-improvement stores themselves:

Which is not to say that mulch is completely safe. I find strange little critters in just about every batch I bring in, regardless of its source. The tubs of mulch I pick up for free from Tulsa's city-run yard waste recycling centers are usually lousy with spiders. But at least they're local spiders, and not some weird non-native species....

That's comforting to know.

However, the "precautions taken by the government..." line doesn't reassure me as much as one would hope.

Hey ... you're doing a great job, Brownie.

That sounds like a particularly spicey problem you guys are going to have. Perhaps, if you 'boil' the mulch and then throw it on a table, you'll be able to pick out the juicey little tid-bits... You know, a 'Termite boil'. Could this be a new fad starting?
